about

This is an album of familiar religious songs performed slowly, at times sparsely, at times ambiently. It's the kind of album you put on during the quiet at night, maybe on headphones as you're going to sleep. All of the tempos are slow, and most of the sounds are soft; there are no loud surprises that will jar you awake if you've drifted off.

I've thought about doing an album of hymns and spirituals for a while. I had a set of religious songs in my head I always liked for their simple chords and pentatonic melodies (not to mention the fact that they're in the public domain!), but it took awhile before I felt like I could make versions of them that were more than just a guy playing trombone over backing tracks. However, over time, thanks in part to the breathy tone of Jon Hassell, which I'm a convert to, I felt like I'd come up with a playing style that could lead to some unique treatments of the songs.

Enjoy.
